Safe Diving, Safeguarded Lives-The Second “5.12 Divers’ Day” in Tianjin

Tianjin, May 12, 2025 - The China Diving and Salvage Association (CDSA) hosted the second annual "5.12 Divers’ Day" ceremony at the Tianjin Grand Auditorium.  "Safe Diving, Safeguarded Lives"is the theme of this year.

The establishment of Divers’ Day is aimed at commemorating the historic occasion when Premier Zhou Enlai met with divers and their families involved in the wreck investigation of the ship “YUEJIN” on May 12, 1963. It sought to honor the professional spirit of divers, strengthen industry safety standards, and promote high-quality development in the diving sector. Experts, outstanding divers, government representatives, and corporate delegates from across the nation gathered to witness this significant industry event.

At the opening ceremony, Song Jiahui, President of CDSA, delivered a speech extending warm greetings to all divers. Mr. Song emphasized the irreplaceable role of diving and salvage operations in China’s major maritime rescues, marine economic development, and national strategic implementation. From the investigation of the Yuejin incident to the Dongfangzhixing rescue mission, divers have consistently demonstrated exceptional expertise and fearless dedication, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of maritime progress. With the emergence of the "diving economy," the industry is now a pivotal engine driving the nation’s maritime power strategy. Mr. Song also underscored that safety is the lifeline of the diving industry. He stated that CDSA always prioritizes the safety and rights of divers, striving to create a better working environment through measures such as improving insurance systems, optimizing medical checkup procedures, and shortening annual review times. Yan Peng, former Assistant Director of the National Fire and Rescue Administration, paid tribute to divers on behalf of veteran firefighters, recognizing their critical role in emergency rescue operations.

CDSA invited three diver representatives to share their experiences. Wu Xianjun, a retired naval diver who transitioned to civilian diving work, recounted his diving career spanning both military service and private sector operations; Zhao Chunxia, a post-90s female diver representative, shared her professional journey and personal growth in this field; Xu Gendi, a veteran diver with fifty years of experience, reflected on his participation in national-level projects. Their stories vividly embodied the dedication and sense of responsibility that define the diving profession.

During the event, the "Declaration on Safeguarding Divers' Occupational Health and Safety" was officially released. Outstanding teams and individuals were recognized for their exceptional contributions in emergency rescue operations and technological innovation.

The event also featured segments such as cutting-edge equipment and technology exhibitions and the award ceremony for an online diving knowledge competition, underscoring the industry's shift toward intelligent and technology-driven development. Through live streaming, the event drew extensive public attention, further enhancing awareness and support for the diving profession.

This year's "5.12 Divers' Day" celebration not only honored the professional ethos of divers but also catalyzed new momentum for the industry's safety-oriented advancement. Moving forward, the CDSA will strengthen multilateral collaboration to propel the sector into a new era characterized by enhanced operational safety and efficiency.
